GeoServer

An open-source Java server for publishing geospatial data through web services.

GeoServer is an open-source Java server used to publish geospatial data through web services. It sits between users, web applications, and backend data stores, translating requests into map layers, features, and database queries. That makes it useful for GIS publishing, but also security-sensitive: the server often handles external input that can influence SQL and data access.

In cyber security, GeoServer matters because weaknesses in its request handling can expose sensitive spatial data or create a path toward deeper compromise. SQL injection is a key risk when attacker-controlled parameters alter queries used for layers, filters, or SQL Views. If the application runs with excessive database privileges, a flaw may lead to data theft, tampering, or in some deployments a remote code execution chain. Defenses focus on patching, restricting network exposure, validating input, using parameterized queries, and applying least privilege to database accounts.
