Full data timer

a term used to indicate an active countdown before full disclosure.

A full data timer is a countdown displayed by an extortion group to signal when it plans to publish more stolen material, usually after a partial leak or a redacted victim post. It is not proof of a breach by itself; it is a pressure mechanism designed to force the target to respond before the deadline expires. The timer may accompany names, file samples, screenshots, or other fragments to make the threat look credible.

In cyber security, the timer matters because it can help defenders separate ordinary public chatter from an active extortion campaign. Security teams often treat it as a triage signal, then look for internal evidence such as unusual access, data exfiltration, credential abuse, or matching file samples. Monitoring the timer also helps incident responders plan communications, preserve evidence, and assess whether the actor is escalating toward full disclosure or using the countdown only to create urgency.
