Fortinet FortiGate

A firewall product line widely used for network perimeter control and segmentation.

Fortinet FortiGate is a firewall product line used to control traffic between networks and to segment sensitive systems from less trusted ones. It can enforce rules based on source, destination, application, user, and protocol, and is often deployed at the perimeter, between internal zones, or in an industrial demilitarized zone.

In cyber security, FortiGate matters because firewalls are a primary control for reducing attack surface and limiting lateral movement. Defenders use them to block unnecessary ports, isolate OT and IT networks, inspect VPN access, and monitor suspicious connections. Attackers, in turn, often try to exploit weak passwords, exposed management interfaces, outdated firmware, or overly broad rules. In practice, a well-managed FortiGate helps turn segmentation policy into enforced traffic control, but only if logging, patching, and rule review are handled consistently.
