Force posture

The placement and readiness of military personnel, equipment, and bases in a region.

Force posture is the placement and readiness of military personnel, equipment, and bases in a region. It describes not just where forces are located, but how quickly they can move, communicate, and operate if conditions change. In modern defence planning, force posture is closely tied to command and control, logistics, and allied coordination.

In cyber security, force posture matters because these functions depend on networks and software. Identity systems, secure communications, logistics platforms, and base infrastructure can all become targets for intrusion, disruption, or deception. An attacker that interferes with these systems may slow deployment, break interoperability, or create confusion during a relocation or reinforcement plan. Defenders therefore treat posture reviews as resilience exercises: they verify backups, harden communications, test continuity plans, and watch for misinformation that could exploit uncertainty about movements or basing. In short, force posture is physical on the surface, but cyber resilience helps determine whether it actually works under pressure.
