Firefox ESR

Mozilla’s long-term support browser branch designed for organizations that need slower change.

Firefox ESR stands for Extended Support Release. It is Mozilla’s long-term support branch of Firefox, built for organizations that need a stable browser with slower feature changes. ESR keeps the same general browser engine and security model as regular Firefox, but it receives security fixes on a controlled schedule and avoids frequent interface or behavior changes.

In cyber security, Firefox ESR matters because browsers are high-value targets: they parse untrusted web content, run scripts, and interact with downloads, logins, and internal apps. Attackers often look for flaws in the shared Firefox codebase, including memory corruption, sandbox escapes, and logic bugs that can enable code execution or data theft. For defenders, ESR is useful because it reduces disruption while still allowing patching, but it is not a “set and forget” choice. Organizations still need rapid update testing, deployment, and restart management to close exposure windows.
