File transfer permission

A control that decides whether a user can move files during a remote session.

File transfer permission is an access control that decides whether a user or operator can move files during a remote session. In remote support and administration tools, this setting may be tied to a role, a session group, or a legacy permission name. It is separate from general login access: a user can be allowed into a session without being allowed to upload or download files.

This control matters because file movement is a direct path for data theft, malware staging, and unauthorized changes on a managed system. Attackers who gain a trusted remote session often try to use file transfer to drop tools, exfiltrate sensitive documents, or prepare later execution. Defenders respond by applying least privilege, revoking file transfer where it is not needed, and reviewing which roles and sessions still have it enabled. In secure administration, this permission should be treated as a high-risk capability, not a convenience feature.
