File export is the act of moving data out of a platform and into a separate file, such as a CSV, spreadsheet, or document, for local use or sharing. It is a normal business function, but it changes how the data is controlled: once exported, the file can be copied, emailed, stored on personal devices, or edited outside the original system.
In cyber security, file export matters because it can weaken visibility and policy enforcement. A platform may log access, restrict sharing, and protect records with retention rules, but those controls often do not follow the exported file. Attackers abuse exports to exfiltrate sensitive data quickly, while defenders try to reduce risk by limiting export rights, monitoring large downloads, using audit trails, and keeping analysis inside governed environments whenever possible.
