Exit strategy

The plan for safely replacing or removing a system and its data.

An exit strategy is the planned way to replace, decommission, or hand off a system and its data without losing control. In cybersecurity, it covers more than uninstalling software: it includes data export, credential revocation, integration shutdown, backup validation, and confirmation that old services can no longer be used.

This matters because security often fails at retirement. If an organization cannot remove a tool cleanly, it may leave behind orphaned accounts, retained data, API keys, or forgotten connections that attackers can abuse. In real defenses, a good exit strategy helps a team switch vendors, contain a risky service, or respond to compromise without disruption. It is especially important for cloud services, outsourced platforms, and AI systems, where data, workflows, and trust are tightly linked. A strong exit strategy reduces lock-in, limits exposure, and makes replacement a controlled security process rather than an emergency.
