Execute Privilege

A permission that allows a user or role to run protected actions or code paths.

Execute privilege is a permission that lets a user, role, or service run protected actions or code paths. In a secure system, it is narrower than general read or write access: the account may be allowed to invoke a function, procedure, stored routine, or server-side script, but not to change data or administrative settings unless those rights are also granted.

This matters because execution rights often sit close to high-value operations. If an attacker steals an account with execute privilege, they may be able to trigger dangerous logic, reach sensitive internal functions, or chain the permission with another flaw to escalate access. Defenders use execute privilege to enforce least privilege, so only trusted roles can run privileged routines. In platforms that combine data storage and application logic, such as database servers with server-side code, careful control of execute rights helps prevent unauthorized code execution and limits the impact of authentication or authorization bugs.
