Electronic ducted fan (EDF)

a motor-driven fan inside a shroud that channels airflow to create thrust.

An electronic ducted fan (EDF) is a motor-driven fan enclosed in a shroud or duct. The duct guides airflow, and the fan produces thrust by accelerating air through it. EDFs are used in radio-controlled aircraft and other systems where compact, contained propulsion is useful.

EDF performance depends on the fan, motor, power supply, duct design, and how the unit is installed. In a real build, an EDF repurposed from another device may have different dimensions, weight, or electrical demands than the aircraft expects. These mismatches can affect thrust, balance, reliability, and control. Engineers test the complete setup-including power delivery and behavior under load-rather than assuming a fan that spins will work safely in its new role.
