Driver component

A software module that runs with elevated trust and can interact closely with the operating system.

A driver component is a software module that runs with elevated trust and can interact closely with the operating system, often at or near kernel level. Unlike ordinary applications, it can manage hardware, system calls, memory, and low-level security controls. Because of that access, drivers are powerful but also risky: a flaw or malicious design can affect the whole machine.

In cyber security, driver components matter because attackers may abuse them to gain persistence, hide activity, disable defenses, or reach deeper privileges than a user-mode process can get. A suspicious driver load is often a major warning sign, especially on systems that do not need custom hardware drivers. Defenders watch for unsigned or unusual drivers, unexpected installation paths, privilege transitions, and kernel-level tampering. Blocking unauthorized driver loading and monitoring driver telemetry are important ways to reduce this attack surface.
