A covert recorder is a hidden device that captures audio without the knowledge or consent of the people being recorded. It may be built into an object, left inside a meeting room, or disguised as ordinary equipment. In cyber security, it matters because confidentiality is not only a digital problem: sensitive discussions about strategy, credentials, or incident response can be exposed even when networks, accounts, and endpoints are well protected.
Attackers and insiders use covert recorders for physical eavesdropping and intelligence gathering. Defenses include controlled room access, visitor management, regular room sweeps, inspection of AV gear, and logging of who enters sensitive spaces. Security teams also train staff to report unusual devices or tampering. The key lesson is simple: a secure login does not protect a conversation if someone can plant hardware in the room.
