Counterfeiting

Making fake goods, documents, or credentials that are meant to be accepted as genuine.

Counterfeiting is the creation of fake goods, documents, accounts, or credentials that are designed to be accepted as genuine. In cybersecurity, it is a trust attack: the goal is not only to copy something, but to make a system, employee, or customer believe the fake is real long enough for it to work.

It matters because many attacks depend on believable imitation. Criminals may counterfeit login pages, identity documents, brand assets, invoices, certificates, or device identifiers to bypass checks and trigger payment, access, or approval. Once a fake passes one review, it can be reused or layered into larger fraud. Defenses focus on authenticity controls such as provenance checks, digital signatures, certificate validation, anti-tamper inspection, and slower manual review for exceptions. The key idea is simple: trust should be verified, not assumed.
