A cooling mod is a hardware change that improves heat removal, usually by adding or replacing fans, heatsinks, thermal paste, vents, or airflow paths. Its goal is simple: keep components cooler so they can run steadily instead of slowing down or crashing under heat.
In cyber security, cooling matters because many attacks and defenses depend on sustained load. A system that overheats may throttle, expose timing changes, or fail during password cracking, malware execution, logging, or packet analysis. Attackers may use cooling mods to keep compromised machines, mining rigs, or lab systems running longer under heavy use. Defenders can treat an unexpected cooling change as a sign of physical tampering or hidden hardware modifications, especially when a device’s performance or power draw changes without explanation.
