Consent propagation

Carrying a user’s permission state through each step of data collection and sharing.

Consent propagation is the process of carrying a person’s permission choices alongside their data as it moves between systems. In an advertising pipeline, this may mean preserving consent status when a purchase or sign-up is collected by a business, processed by a backend service, and sent to an advertising platform.

It matters because a permission decision can be lost or misapplied at system boundaries. If data is forwarded without its relevant consent state, a company may share information in ways the user did not authorize. Defenses include attaching consent signals to events, checking them before collection or transmission, limiting data fields and access, and logging decisions so flows can be audited. Teams should test that integrations and downstream systems preserve the correct state, including when data is transformed or retried.
