Configuration records

internal files that may describe how a process or system is arranged.

Configuration records are internal files or documents that describe how a system, service, or business process is arranged. They may list settings, dependencies, access paths, release steps, and operational rules. In security work, these records matter because they can reveal how technology is connected, where sensitive controls live, and what normal behavior should look like.

Attackers value configuration records because they can speed up intrusion, help them move laterally, or identify the most disruptive systems to target. In extortion cases, even partial exposure of these records can create leverage by exposing workflow details or making a leak look credible. Defenders use the same material for baseline comparisons, change management, and recovery after an incident. Protecting configuration records with access control, logging, and integrity checks helps reduce both unauthorized disclosure and silent tampering.
