Configuration profile

A management file used to apply settings and restrictions on Apple platforms.

A configuration profile is a signed management file used on Apple platforms to apply device settings, enforce restrictions, and distribute account, network, or security policies. Administrators use profiles to manage Macs, iPhones, and iPads at scale without touching each device manually. A profile can set passcode rules, Wi-Fi and VPN settings, certificate trust, app behavior, and feature controls such as limiting access to specific services.

In cyber security, configuration profiles matter because they are a powerful control surface. Defenders use them for mobile device management, hardening, compliance, and remote policy enforcement. Attackers also value them: a malicious profile can redirect traffic through an attacker-controlled proxy, install trusted certificates, reduce security prompts, or lock a device into unwanted settings. Because profiles can quietly change system behavior, users and administrators should verify who issued them, what payloads they contain, and whether they are required by policy before installing them.
