Cognitive rust belt

A metaphor for the slow loss of analytical capability under repeated reliance on AI.

Cognitive rust belt is a metaphor for the gradual loss of analytical skill that can happen when people repeatedly rely on AI instead of doing the reasoning themselves. Like physical rust, the decline is slow and often unnoticed until a team needs to work without the tool.

In cyber security, this matters because analysts, incident responders, and fraud reviewers depend on judgment: spotting weak assumptions, correlating alerts, and questioning false positives. If AI is treated as authoritative and humans only click “approve,” verification habits can decay through automation bias and cognitive offloading. That can lead to missed anomalies, shallow triage, and weaker response decisions. Defenses against this risk include source tracing, second review for high-impact actions, and regular no-AI drills that keep core investigation skills sharp.
