Cloud protection

A Defender mechanism that uses cloud-delivered threat intelligence to speed up protection updates.

Cloud protection is a Microsoft Defender feature that uses cloud-delivered threat intelligence to improve and accelerate protection updates. Instead of waiting only for local signature changes, Defender can consult Microsoft’s cloud services for fresher indicators, reputation data, and behavior-based verdicts. That helps endpoints react faster to new malware, phishing infrastructure, and suspicious file activity.

In cyber security, this matters because speed is part of defense. Attackers often change payloads quickly to evade static detections, but cloud protection can close that gap by pushing updated decisions across many devices at once. Administrators usually keep it enabled alongside platform and security-intelligence updates, because disabling it can slow detection and weaken response during active threats or when a vulnerability affects the protection stack itself.
