A click-tracking URL is a rewritten link that routes a user through a tracking service before sending them to the final destination. Email security tools, marketing platforms, and secure email gateways use this technique to record that a link was opened, inspect the target, or apply policy checks before delivery.
In cyber security, click-tracking URLs matter because the extra redirect layer can hide the real destination, alter how a message appears to the recipient, and create a trusted-looking path that attackers may abuse. Phishing campaigns sometimes use compromised or misused tracking infrastructure to make malicious links look legitimate, delay detection, or blend into normal business traffic. Defenders watch these URLs in mail logs, sandbox redirects, and URL reputation systems to uncover suspicious redirects, blocked destinations, or link chains that lead to credential theft pages or other malicious content.
