Authority request

A request that appears to come from a government or legal body and can trigger special handling.

An authority request is a message or form that appears to come from a government agency, court, regulator, or other legal body and asks an organization to disclose data or take action. Because it carries the appearance of official power, it may trigger special handling in legal, compliance, support, or security workflows.

In cyber security, authority requests matter because attackers can abuse trust rather than break systems. A forged request may use official-looking language, logos, domain names, or case references to pressure staff into releasing identity records, transaction logs, or other sensitive data. Defenders treat these requests as a trust-boundary problem: verify sender authenticity, require independent validation channels, and limit who can approve disclosure. Strong review steps reduce the chance that a convincing fake becomes a data leak.
