Astrophysical plasma

plasma found in space, including stars, winds, and other high-energy environments.

Astrophysical plasma is ionized matter found in space, such as the Sun’s atmosphere, stellar winds, and other high-energy environments. Unlike ordinary gas, plasma contains free electrons and ions, so it reacts strongly to electric and magnetic fields. This makes it highly dynamic: it can flow, twist, heat up, and form turbulence and instabilities.

In cyber security, astrophysical plasma matters because it drives space weather. Disturbances in solar plasma can affect satellites, GPS, radio links, and power-grid timing, creating outages or degraded visibility that defenders must plan for. Security teams for critical infrastructure and space systems monitor plasma conditions to predict communication loss, protect onboard electronics, and schedule operations safely. Attackers do not weaponize plasma itself, but they can take advantage of the disruption it causes when defenses and monitoring are temporarily weakened.
