AMI

Amazon Machine Image, a reusable template for launching EC2 instances with a predefined software state.

An AMI, or Amazon Machine Image, is a reusable template used to launch EC2 instances. It contains the operating system, installed software, configuration settings, and sometimes initialization data that defines a machine’s starting state. Because it can be copied, shared, and reused, an AMI is more than a simple image file: it is a packaged system blueprint.

In cyber security, AMIs matter because they can expose more than administrators expect. A public AMI may reveal software versions, configuration choices, startup scripts, or embedded secrets if hygiene is poor. Attackers look for publicly shared images to learn how an environment is built or to recover sensitive data from a cloned system. Defenders reduce this risk by limiting who can create or share AMIs, scanning images before publication, encrypting sensitive components, and monitoring for unexpected changes in sharing permissions.
