Ambush marketing

Promotional tactics that seek attention from a major event without official sponsorship.

Ambush marketing is a promotional tactic that tries to gain attention from a major event without being an official sponsor. The goal is to borrow the event’s visibility, symbols, or timing so audiences assume some kind of connection. In cyber security, the term matters because the same trust abuse often appears in brand impersonation, fake event campaigns, and deceptive ads that ride on a well-known name to look legitimate.

Attackers and opportunists use this pattern to create false credibility. A malicious site may mimic an event page, a social post may imply endorsement, or a phishing message may exploit event hype to push clicks and sign-ins. Defenders reduce the risk with trademark monitoring, approved-brand guidelines, fast takedown processes, and careful review of digital campaigns. The key security lesson is simple: visibility is not authorization, and a convincing message can still be misleading.
