Alert tuning

Adjusting detection rules to reduce false positives and improve response quality.

Alert tuning is the process of adjusting detection rules, thresholds, and alert logic so a security system produces more useful signals. The goal is to reduce false positives, avoid alert fatigue, and make sure high-risk activity stands out quickly.

In cyber defense, tuning matters because even strong detections can become noisy if they trigger on normal admin work, routine scanning, or expected behavior from tools. Analysts tune rules by refining conditions, adding context, suppressing benign patterns, and setting severity levels that match the real risk. In attacks, poorly tuned alerts can hide important activity in a flood of noise; in defenses, well-tuned alerts help teams respond faster when suspicious actions touch a decoy, reach for sensitive data, or move laterally. Good tuning is not about silencing alerts, but about making each one more actionable.
