AI guardrails

Controls meant to block unsafe prompts or outputs before they cause harm.

AI guardrails are controls that try to stop unsafe prompts, dangerous outputs, or risky actions before they cause harm. They can sit in front of a model, inside an application workflow, or around tool use and data access. Common guardrails include prompt filters, policy classifiers, output moderation, and restrictions on what an agent is allowed to do.

They matter because large language models can be steered by malicious input, accidental misuse, or prompt injection. In real attacks, adversaries often hide harmful intent inside text that looks normal, hoping a lightweight screening layer will miss it. In defense, guardrails are useful, but they should not be treated as a single point of trust. Stronger setups combine multiple layers: separate instructions from user data, monitor outputs and actions, sandbox tools, and apply least privilege so even a compromised model cannot do much damage.
