Ad-supported plan

a lower-cost option that includes advertising during viewing.

An ad-supported plan is a lower-cost subscription tier that shows advertisements during viewing. Instead of paying only with money, the user accepts ad breaks, tracking, or less control over playback in exchange for a reduced price. Streaming platforms use this model to segment customers into different access levels.

In cyber security, ad-supported plans matter because ads depend on third-party delivery systems, analytics, and real-time bidding pipelines. Each added vendor or script increases the attack surface. Attackers can abuse these channels with malvertising, misleading redirects, data collection, or compromised ad infrastructure. Defenders reduce risk by isolating ad content, limiting script execution, reviewing ad partners, and monitoring for unusual network traffic or browser behavior.
