Account reuse

using the same login across multiple services, which can increase exposure if credentials are misused.

Account reuse means using the same login credentials, or the same identity provider, across multiple services. It is convenient for users, but it also creates a larger blast radius: if one site is breached, phished, or poorly protected, attackers can try the same username and password elsewhere. This is the basis of credential stuffing and many account-takeover attempts. Reuse can also extend to recovery email addresses, phone numbers, or single sign-on accounts that tie several services together.

In cyber security, account reuse matters because it weakens trust boundaries. A compromise in one low-value app can expose a higher-value mailbox, cloud service, or community account. Defenders reduce this risk with unique passwords, password managers, multi-factor authentication, and separate controls for recovery and session management. Users should be alert to reused credentials, unexpected login alerts, and login prompts on services they have not used directly before.
