XLS

A spreadsheet file format that can be parsed by document-processing libraries and may carry malicious structure.

XLS is a classic spreadsheet file format used by many document-processing libraries to import, modify, and export worksheet data. In security terms, it is not just a file type: it is an input format that parsers must interpret safely. Because XLS files can contain complex internal structures, a maliciously crafted workbook may trigger bugs in the parsing code.

This matters when applications accept spreadsheets from untrusted users through uploads, previews, reporting tools, or conversion services. A flawed parser may loop indefinitely, consume excessive CPU, or block worker threads, creating a denial-of-service condition instead of a data breach. Defenders should treat XLS handling as hostile-input processing: patch document libraries, isolate parsing in separate workers or containers, apply resource limits, and validate file type and size before import. Timeouts help, but they do not replace parser hardening or isolation.
