Workload intensity

The amount of effort, time pressure, and cognitive load a role demands over a given period.

Workload intensity is the amount of effort, time pressure, and cognitive load a role demands over a period of time. In cyber security, it helps describe how hard it is for analysts, engineers, and responders to keep up with alerts, investigations, patching, and governance tasks. High workload intensity means people must make fast decisions, switch contexts often, and verify many automated outputs.

This matters because overloaded teams miss signals, delay containment, and make more mistakes. Attackers can take advantage of that pressure by generating alert floods, spamming support queues, or timing activity when staff are already stretched. Defenders try to lower workload intensity with better triage rules, automation that reduces repetitive work, clear runbooks, and realistic staffing. The goal is not only to do more work, but to keep critical security work accurate and sustainable.
