Web application root directory

The top-level file area of a web app, where sensitive content should be kept to a minimum.

The web application root directory is the top-level file area that a web app serves from or uses to store files needed by the application. It often contains static assets, configuration fragments, templates, uploads, or deployment leftovers. Because it is close to the public-facing path, anything stored there may be easier to reach if a file disclosure bug, path traversal issue, or misconfigured handler exists.

In cyber security, the root directory matters because sensitive files placed there can turn a small access flaw into a serious exposure. Attackers may target predictable filenames, backup copies, or config files that should never be web-retrievable. Defenders reduce risk by keeping secrets outside the web root, limiting permissions, removing unused artifacts, and reviewing what a vulnerable endpoint can return. Good file placement is a basic but powerful control.
