Vulnerability exploitation window

The time between a flaw becoming known and attackers using it in the wild.

The vulnerability exploitation window is the period between when a software flaw becomes public or known to defenders and when attackers begin using it in real attacks. This gap can be short for high-value systems or widely exposed services, and it often shrinks as exploit code, proof-of-concepts, and scanning tools spread.

It matters because every hour in the window can increase the chance of compromise. Defenders use it to prioritize patching, apply temporary mitigations, block indicators, and harden exposed assets before mass exploitation starts. Attackers use the same window to target unpatched systems, automate scanning, and reuse a vulnerability before organizations finish their response. In practice, a short exploitation window turns vulnerability management into a race between disclosure, remediation, and active abuse.
