Vulnerability backlog

A growing set of unresolved security findings waiting for triage, remediation, or verification.

A vulnerability backlog is the growing queue of unresolved security findings that still need triage, remediation, or verification. It often includes issues from scanners, manual assessments, and threat intelligence, but it is not just a list of bugs: it is a record of work that has not yet been assigned, scheduled, or closed.

In cyber security, backlogs matter because they show the gap between detection and action. A large backlog can mean poor asset ownership, slow patch management, weak escalation paths, or lack of remediation authority. Attackers benefit when high-risk findings remain open, especially known exploited vulnerabilities that are already being used in the wild. Defenders use the backlog to prioritize by exposure, business impact, and exploitability, then verify that the fix actually worked. A healthy program does not try to eliminate every finding at once; it keeps the queue moving and closes the riskiest items first.
