VMware vSphere

Virtualization platform used to run and manage virtual machines.

VMware vSphere is a virtualization platform used to run and manage virtual machines on shared physical servers. It typically includes ESXi hypervisors and centralized management through vCenter, letting administrators create, move, snapshot, and monitor workloads from one control plane.

In cyber security, vSphere matters because it concentrates a lot of power in a small number of administrative interfaces. If an attacker steals vCenter credentials, exploits a management component, or reaches an exposed ESXi host, they may be able to shut down systems, encrypt virtual disks, delete snapshots, or access multiple servers at once. Defenders protect vSphere by isolating management networks, using strong authentication and least privilege, patching ESXi and vCenter quickly, and logging administrative activity. In home labs and small environments, vSphere is common because it provides enterprise-style virtualization, but that also means the same security discipline is needed.
