Virtualization framework

Apple’s framework for creating and managing virtual machines, including Linux guests, on supported Mac hardware.

Apple’s Virtualization framework is a macOS API for creating and managing virtual machines on supported Mac hardware. It is commonly used to run Linux guests with controlled access to CPU, memory, storage, networking, and host resources. Developers use it to build isolated environments for testing, automation, and desktop tools that need a separate guest operating system.

In cyber security, the framework matters because a VM is only as safe as its isolation settings. If an application exposes shared folders, clipboard features, networking bridges, or other host integrations, a compromise inside the guest can become a path to host data exposure or tampering. Attackers may try to abuse those bridges to read files, alter scripts, or reach secrets stored on the Mac. Defenders use the framework’s isolation controls to reduce blast radius, but they must still review mounts, permissions, and secret handling carefully.
