Virtual environment

A simulated computing space that reproduces system behavior in software.

A virtual environment is a simulated computing space built in software that behaves like a real system. It can imitate an operating system, CPU architecture, storage, memory, and network behavior closely enough for users or programs to interact with it as if it were physical hardware. In practice, this is the foundation of emulators, virtual machines, and many sandboxing tools.

In cyber security, virtual environments matter because they provide isolation. Defenders use them to inspect suspicious files, detonate malware safely, test patches, and reproduce legacy systems without risking production machines. Attackers also encounter them when their malware checks for signs of analysis or refuses to run inside a sandbox. Because a virtual environment can mimic older platforms, it is also useful for studying obsolete architectures and understanding how software behaves when the original hardware is no longer available.
