Version triage

The process of checking exact software builds to determine whether they are affected by a vulnerability.

Version triage is the process of checking the exact software build, patch level, or release number running in an environment to see whether it is affected by a known vulnerability. It is one of the first defensive steps after a security alert because “product name” alone is not enough; a flaw may apply only to specific builds or may already be fixed in newer ones.

In practice, defenders use version triage to compare installed software against vendor advisories, verify which hosts are exposed, and decide whether immediate patching, isolation, or compensating controls are needed. In real attacks, threat actors also rely on version clues to choose targets that are likely unpatched. For infrastructure products such as monitoring or management tools, quick version triage matters even more, because a vulnerable build can sit close to privileged accounts and control functions. Accurate build verification helps avoid both missed exposure and unnecessary emergency work on systems that are already safe.
