User setting

a preference that controls how software behaves for a person or device.

A user setting is a preference that controls how software behaves for a person or device. It can be cosmetic, like theme or language, or functional, like mouse speed, notification behavior, proxy use, or security prompts. Settings are usually stored locally, in a profile, or in a management system so the software can restore the same behavior each time it runs.

In cyber security, user settings matter because attackers and defenders both care about configuration. Malicious actors may change settings to hide warnings, weaken protections, redirect traffic, or make a system easier to control. Defenders watch for configuration drift, where a patch, policy change, or unauthorized action resets a setting and alters expected behavior. Unexpected setting changes can also create support noise and undermine trust in updates, especially in multilingual or managed environments where consistency is important.
