User-modifiable

Capable of being changed by the person using the device.

User-modifiable means a feature, setting, preset, or file that the person using a device can change without needing a manufacturer update or special tools. In consumer hardware, this often includes configurable sound profiles, buttons, permissions, or stored content. In the audio example, user-modifiable effect presets let the owner alter how the device behaves and sounds.

In cyber security, user-modifiable features matter because they expand the attack surface and the trust model. A setting that can be changed by the user can also be altered by malware, a malicious app, or an attacker who gains access to the device or its admin interface. Security teams look for protections such as access controls, signed configuration files, integrity checks, and audit logs. At the same time, controlled user modification is useful for defense, because it lets administrators tune settings, disable risky functions, and apply secure defaults without replacing the hardware.
