Update infrastructure is the set of servers, mirrors, signing services, and network routes used to deliver software patches and version updates. It is a critical part of the software supply chain because users often trust updates automatically, sometimes with high privileges. If attackers compromise or divert this infrastructure, they may be able to replace a legitimate update with a malicious one or block updates entirely.
In real attacks, update infrastructure can be targeted by server compromise, DNS abuse, or routing attacks that redirect traffic to an attacker-controlled host. Defenders reduce this risk by signing updates, verifying certificates and hashes, using multiple distribution paths, monitoring routing anomalies, and limiting where update traffic can come from. In short, the security of the update channel is as important as the security of the software itself.
