Update cycle

The regular process used to deliver fixes and maintenance.

An update cycle is the regular schedule a vendor uses to deliver software fixes, security patches, and maintenance changes. In practice, it includes monthly patches, feature updates, and end-of-support milestones that determine when a system keeps receiving improvements and when it does not.

In cyber security, the update cycle matters because it controls how quickly known vulnerabilities are closed. Attackers often target systems that fall behind, since unpatched flaws are easier to exploit than current software. Defenders use the cycle to plan testing, deployment, rollback, and inventory checks so endpoints stay within the supported window. When the cycle stops or a device misses it, the system can still run, but its exposure window grows and its protection baseline weakens. Good patch governance helps keep the fleet resilient and reduces the chance that old bugs become easy entry points.
