Update API

The service layer that delivers update information and packages to client systems.

An Update API is the service layer that client software queries to learn whether updates are available and to fetch the approved packages or metadata. In platforms such as WordPress, this channel sits between maintainers and the systems that install plugins, themes, or application components. It usually returns version numbers, download URLs, hashes, and other trust signals that the client uses before applying a release.

Update APIs matter because they are part of the software supply chain. If an attacker can tamper with the API, poison its metadata, or get a malicious package accepted upstream, many clients may install the bad update through a normal, trusted workflow. Defenders therefore protect this layer with signing, access control, review gates, scanning, and integrity checks. In practice, the Update API is both a distribution mechanism and a security chokepoint: it can spread fixes quickly, but it can also spread compromised code just as fast.
