Unusual access patterns

Behavior that deviates from normal account use and may indicate suspicious activity.

Unusual access patterns are account behaviors that differ from what is normal for a user, device, or role. This can include logging in at odd hours, accessing systems from new locations, pulling large volumes of files, or reaching resources that are rarely used. By itself, an anomaly is not proof of compromise, but it is often one of the earliest signs that credentials have been misused.

In cyber security, these patterns matter because many intrusions look like legitimate activity once an attacker has valid access. Defenders monitor login history, file access, data transfer size, and workstation behavior to spot silent theft, privilege abuse, or account takeover. Alerts based on unusual access patterns are especially useful in protecting research, financial records, and other sensitive data, where attackers may try to blend in while collecting information over time.
