Unsupported Version

A software release that no longer receives full vendor security fixes.

An unsupported version is a software release that no longer receives full vendor security fixes, or receives only limited maintenance under special terms. Once support ends, newly discovered vulnerabilities in that release may remain unpatched, even if a fix exists for newer versions. In practice, this creates a permanent exposure window for systems that stay on old builds.

Unsupported versions matter because attackers often scan for them first. Older software tends to have known weaknesses, weak compatibility with modern defenses, and fewer patch options. Defenders use asset inventory, lifecycle tracking, and upgrade planning to find these systems early. If immediate replacement is not possible, teams may isolate the asset, restrict access, add compensating controls, and monitor closely until the version can be retired.
