Unicode tag characters

A Unicode character family intended for tagging use, often invisible in tag-unaware systems.

Unicode tag characters are part of the Unicode Tags block, a set of code points intended for tagging and special text markup. In many systems they are invisible or ignored by rendering engines, which makes them easy to miss in logs, filters, and email previews.

They matter in cyber security because attackers can insert these hidden characters into words to split them at the processing layer while keeping the message readable to humans. A keyword filter may fail to match a term like loan or credit if an invisible tag character sits in the middle. Defenders reduce this risk by normalizing text, inspecting raw code points, and testing detection pipelines against adversarial Unicode input. Their presence in ordinary phishing lures is often a sign of deliberate obfuscation.
