Unicode obfuscation

A hiding method that uses unusual or visually deceptive characters to mask malicious script logic.

Unicode obfuscation is a hiding technique that inserts unusual, invisible, or visually misleading characters into text so malicious script logic is harder to read or analyze. Attackers may use emoji, zero-width characters, homoglyphs, or mixed scripts to make code look harmless while preserving executable behavior after parsing or normalization.

In cyber attacks, this is often seen in phishing attachments, JScript, and other script-based payloads. The goal is to slow human review and confuse some filters or static analysis tools. It matters because defenders may miss the real logic if they only skim the file. Good defenses include Unicode normalization, script-content inspection, interpreter telemetry, and behavior-based detection that looks for suspicious launches, encoded commands, or memory-based execution rather than relying only on visible text.
