An unauthorized transfer is a transaction or asset movement made without the owner’s permission or outside approved controls. In cyber security, this can mean money leaving a payment account, tokens moving from a crypto wallet, or internal records being changed by someone who should not have access.
This term matters because unauthorized transfers are often the visible result of deeper failures: stolen credentials, compromised keys, weak approval workflows, malware on an operator’s device, or abused admin privileges. Defenders look for unusual destination addresses, abnormal timing, missing approvals, and changes that bypass normal checks. Common defenses include multi-factor authentication, multi-signature approvals, least-privilege access, transaction monitoring, and rapid withdrawal or transfer holds when suspicious activity appears.
