Unauthenticated API

An application interface that accepts requests without verifying the caller’s identity.

An unauthenticated API is an application interface that processes requests without first verifying who is calling it. It may still be protected by network placement, but it does not require a login, token, API key, or other identity check before accepting commands or returning data.

In cyber security, this matters because an open control surface can be abused by anything that can reach it: a script, a browser, a local process, or a remote attacker who finds a network path in front of it. In local AI and automation stacks, an unauthenticated API can let web content or malware send prompts, change settings, or trigger tools if the service is exposed through localhost misconfiguration, proxying, or DNS rebinding. Defenders reduce risk by requiring authentication, binding services only to loopback when intended, and testing the live deployment path instead of assuming the interface is private.
