U-space is the European framework for managing drone traffic in shared airspace through digital services. It is designed to make drone operations predictable and machine-readable, using services such as flight authorization, geo-awareness, network identification, and traffic information. In practice, U-space turns airspace into a managed digital environment rather than a purely visual one.
From a cyber-security perspective, U-space matters because its safety depends on trusted data and reliable communications. If authorization services are spoofed, identification data is forged, or traffic feeds are disrupted, drones may be allowed into restricted zones or separated aircraft may be misled. Defenders therefore treat U-space as part of the wider attack surface: they secure identities, monitor telemetry, validate geofencing data, and build resilience against jamming, tampering, and service outages. In both attacks and defenses, the core issue is trust in the digital systems that coordinate flight.
