Tunneler

Tooling that forwards traffic through a compromised system to reach internal services.

A tunneler is malware or operator tooling that forwards network traffic through a compromised host so the attacker can reach internal services that are not directly exposed to the internet. It can wrap traffic in common protocols, relay connections, or proxy sessions from the foothold into the target network. In effect, the infected system becomes a hidden bridge.

Tunnelers matter because they turn one edge compromise into internal access, enabling lateral movement, command-and-control, and access to management ports, databases, or remote administration tools. In real attacks, a tunneler often appears after initial exploitation, paired with a web shell or backdoor to keep the channel open. Defenders should watch for unusual proxy behavior, unexpected outbound connections, and edge devices suddenly talking to internal hosts they normally never reach.
